When Apple introduced system-wide dark mode in 2019, the design community erupted in approval. Dark interfaces weren't new; developers had used terminal black backgrounds for decades, but their elevation to a mainstream OS feature felt like validation of something designers intuitively believed: that staring at bright white screens all day was somehow wrong. Within months, dark mode became the default aesthetic for everything from productivity apps to banking interfaces.

The appeal is immediate and visceral. Dark mode looks sleek, feels modern, and seems gentler on the eyes during late-night work sessions. But a growing body of research in cognitive psychology and visual ergonomics suggests we might be confusing aesthetic preference with functional superiority. The question isn't whether dark mode feels better it clearly does for many users but whether that feeling corresponds to measurable benefits in eye health, reading comprehension, and sustained attention.

The Psychological Pull of Darkness

Dark mode's appeal operates on multiple psychological levels. There's an aesthetic dimension: dark interfaces signal sophistication and technical prowess, evoking everything from recording studios to spacecraft cockpits. They feel premium in a way that bright white screens, associated with office documents and institutional software, simply don't.

More importantly, dark mode creates an immediate sensation of relief. When you toggle from light to dark in a dimly lit room, the reduction in luminance feels like your eyes are relaxing. This perception has biological roots: our pupils do constrict less in darker environments, but the subjective feeling of comfort doesn't necessarily translate to objective improvement in visual performance. We conflate the absence of discomfort with the presence of benefit.

What the Science Actually Says

Research on reading comprehension consistently favours dark text on light backgrounds. A 2013 study published in Ergonomics found that positive polarity displays (dark text on light backgrounds) resulted in better proofreading performance and fewer visual fatigue symptoms. The effect stems from basic visual physiology: in bright conditions, our pupils constrict, increasing depth of field and sharpening focus. With dark mode, pupils dilate, which actually reduces the sharpness of text edges through increased spherical aberration.

The eye strain we associate with bright screens often isn't about the background colour at all; it's about excessive contrast, poor ambient lighting, or display brightness mismatched to the environment. A properly calibrated light mode in an appropriately lit room typically causes less strain than dark mode precisely because it supports better optical focus. For users with astigmatism, a condition affecting roughly one-third of adults, this effect is even more pronounced. Light mode helps compensate for the irregular corneal shape that makes dark-on-light text blur more easily.

The Context Problem

The disconnect between perception and performance reveals something crucial about interface design: context matters more than universal rules. Dark mode genuinely helps in specific scenarios: watching video content, working in very dark environments, or for users with photosensitivity. OLED screens also benefit from power savings with dark pixels. But these valid use cases have been extrapolated into a general-purpose preference.

What makes dark mode feel better is often what makes it less optimal for reading-intensive work. The reduced contrast gives our visual system less to work with, even as the lower brightness feels more comfortable. It's similar to how soft, warm lighting feels relaxing but makes it harder to perform detail work. Comfort and performance are sometimes at odds.

Designing for Preference and Performance

The solution isn't to abandon dark mode but to recognise it as a preference-driven feature rather than an ergonomic imperative. The best interfaces offer both modes and adapt to ambient lighting conditions, acknowledging that user comfort, even when partly illusory, matters for sustained engagement. What designers should resist is the assumption that dark mode is inherently better for eyes or focus.

The dark mode phenomenon illustrates a broader tension in interface design between what users prefer and what research suggests they need. Sometimes the two align, but often they diverge in subtle ways that only longitudinal studies reveal. As we build increasingly personalised interfaces, the challenge is honouring user preference while gently steering toward configurations that support their actual goals even when those configurations feel slightly less comfortable at first glance.
